Biological age = calendar age + sum of lifestyle adjustments (diet, exercise, sleep, smoking, alcohol, stress each add or subtract years).

Your biological age describes how old your body behaves — at the level of cells, heart, lungs and metabolism — versus how old your birth certificate says you are. It is a wellness estimate, not a diagnosis. Two 50-year-olds can genuinely differ in fitness and organ function, and biological age is a way of capturing the gap between the number of years lived and the body's actual state.

The two ages, in plain terms

Your chronological age is simply how long you have been alive — a fixed, factual number. Your biological age reflects how your body has aged in practical terms: a fit, non-smoking 55-year-old who sleeps well and eats whole foods may have the cardiovascular and metabolic profile of someone in their 40s, while a sedentary smoker of 45 might carry biomarkers typical of someone older. The gap between the two is the interesting part, because much of it is influenced by habits that are within your control.

How the estimate works

Six lifestyle factors each add or subtract years from your calendar age:

Sum the adjustments and add them to your age.

Example

A 40-year-old with a good diet, regular exercise, 7–9 hours of sleep, no smoking, occasional alcohol and low stress:

−1 + −2 + −1 + 0 + 0 + −1 = −5 → biological age ≈ 35

Notice the weighting: smoking carries the heaviest penalty and good exercise the biggest reward, which mirrors how much those two habits dominate population research on healthy ageing.

A real test vs this estimate

Lab tests measure biological markers — telomere length, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, grip strength — to gauge biological age. Lifestyle questionnaires like this one are a useful first screen: they flag the habits most strongly linked to premature ageing. But a questionnaire cannot measure your actual blood pressure or glucose, so treat the output as a reflection of your habits and lifestyle, which research strongly links to ageing, rather than a lab-grade measurement of your cells.
