Rectangular (cuboid) tanks
Volume = length × width × height
A tank measuring 100 cm × 50 cm × 60 cm:
Volume = 100 × 50 × 60 = 3,00,000 cm³
Liters = 3,00,000 ÷ 1,000 = **300 liters**
Cylindrical (round) tanks
Volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × height
A tank with 60 cm diameter and 60 cm height:
Radius = 30 cm
Volume = π × 30² × 60 ≈ 1,69,646 cm³
Liters ≈ **169.65 liters**

Sizing for a household
Rules of thumb for domestic planning:
- A person typically uses roughly 100–200 liters per day across drinking, washing, flushing and cooking — more in summer.

- A common approach in India: an overhead tank covering about one full day of household consumption, backed by an underground sump storing several days' supply to smooth over tap-line downtime.
A 1,000-liter overhead tank is therefore a mainstream choice for four people; 2,000 liters buys a headroom day, and homes with patchy supply lean on larger sump storage — often sized to the longest observed outage.
Partial-fill and reserve planning
You do not always need the tank full. If a pump cannot draw the bottom 10 cm of a sump, deduct that height before computing: a 60-cm-high rectangular tank effectively provides only ~50 cm of depth, cutting capacity by a sixth. The number that really matters at the planning table is days of supply: capacity ÷ daily draw tells you how long a full tank carries the household without a drop of incoming water — size the total against your longest experienced outage, not the arithmetic alone.
Practical physics: capacity ≠ usable water
Nominal capacity is never fully usable:
- Tanks fill below the floating inlet, leaving a ~10 cm "free-board" unoccupied.
- Sediment settles at the bottom, so the final centimeters are rarely pumped clean.
- Domed or tapered tops hold less than straight-sided geometry suggests.
Adding 10–15% to the geometric answer is the standard fudge factor for comfortable daily operation.

- Mixing units inside one calculation — cm in one field, metres in another.
- Sizing against a single day's usage with no reserve for the supply gap.
- Treating the salesman's plate capacity as your custom geometry — a "1,000-liter" label describes a standard model, not your measurements.
- Buying for peak-season demand and running half empty for nine months.
