Golf Handicap Calculator

A golf handicap is built from score differentials, each calculated as (score − course rating) × 113 ÷ slope. Your index is the average of your best 8 differentials from your last 20 rounds.

functionsThe formula

Differential = (score − course rating) × 113 ÷ slope. Example: (90 − 71.5) × 113 ÷ 113 = 18.5.

A golf handicap lets players of different abilities compete fairly by adjusting every score to the difficulty of the course. It's calculated under the World Handicap System (WHS), which since 2020 replaced a patchwork of national systems with one unified set of rules so a player from almost anywhere can compete almost anywhere else.

Why handicaps exist

Without a handicap, a scratch golfer and a weekend player cannot realistically compete on level terms. The handicap system answers that by expressing your demonstrated ability in strokes-per-round relative to a standard, essentially your personal "cookie" that adjusts every round for how hard or easy the course you played actually is. That makes the score you shoot on a tough links course comparable to one you shoot at your friendly local nine.

The score differential

Every round becomes a differential that corrects for how hard the course is:

Differential = (score − course rating) × 113 ÷ slope
  • Course rating — what a scratch golfer would score on that course, reflecting its overall difficulty.
  • Slope rating — how much harder the course is for a bogey golfer; 113 is the standard/average. Slope values typically range from around 55 to 155.

Example

You shoot 90 on a course rated 71.5 with a slope of 113:

Differential = (90 − 71.5) × 113 ÷ 113 = 18.5

Shoot 90 on a tougher course (slope 130) and the differential improves to 16.1 — your round was more impressive there because the course played harder.

From differentials to your handicap index

The WHS takes your best 8 differentials from your last 20 rounds and averages them:

Handicap index = average of best 8 of last 20 differentials

Before you have 20 rounds, fewer rounds are used — as few as 3 to establish a first index. The "best 8 of 20" rule is deliberate: it reflects your potential good play rather than punishing your occasional bad round, which is why golfers say the index measures your best day more than your average day.

What the number means

An index of 18.5 means you typically play about 18 strokes over a course rating on a standard course. Lower is better: scratch is 0, and professionals fall below 0 (a "plus" handicap). Your course handicap on any specific course then adjusts the index for that course's slope and rating, telling you how many strokes you get on that particular set of tees that day.

Practical tips for tracking

  • Record every round, not just your good ones — the WHS depends on a genuine sample.
  • Post scores from different courses so your index reflects real variety.
  • A single differential is educational, but it takes several rounds for the index to stabilise.
  • Watch how your differential moves after a great round on a hard course — it can drop dramatically.

You still need at least a few rounds to get a real index — this calculator gives you the per-round differential that builds it, and the cleanest way to understand why a round felt better or worse than the raw number suggests.

helpFrequently asked questions

question_markHow do I calculate my golf handicap?

Compute each round’s differential as (score − course rating) × 113 ÷ slope. Your handicap index is the average of your best 8 differentials from your last 20 rounds.

question_markWhat is a golf handicap differential?

It is a single round’s score adjusted for course difficulty using the course rating and slope rating, so rounds on different courses can be compared fairly.

question_markWhat does a handicap of 20 mean?

It means you typically play about 20 strokes over the course rating. The lower the handicap, the better the golfer — scratch is 0, professionals are plus.

question_markHow many rounds do I need for a handicap index?

Under the World Handicap System you can establish an index with as few as 3 rounds, but it becomes most reliable once you have 20, at which point only your best 8 of those 20 differentials are averaged.
