Gold Value Calculator
The gold calculator estimates the value of your gold based on its weight, purity (24k, 22k or 18k) and the current price per gram, then adds making charges to show the total you actually pay — 20 grams of 22k at ₹7,250/g works out to ₹1,45,000 plus about 8% making charges.

functionsThe formula
Gold in India is sold by weight and purity, and both get negotiated differently. Purity is measured in carats (k): 24k is 99.9% pure gold, 22k (91.6%) is the standard for jewellery because pure gold is too soft for daily wear, and 18k (75%) is common in studded or western-style pieces. India is one of the world's largest gold consumers, and most of what is bought ends up as household jewellery rather than in vaults — which is why understanding exactly how a jeweller prices a bangle matters so much.
How the value is worked out
Gold value = weight (grams) × price per gram
For example, 20 grams of 22k gold at ₹7,250 per gram has a gold value of:
20 × 7,250 = ₹1,45,000
Jewellers then add making charges — a fee for crafting — typically 8% to 14% of the gold value, plus any GST. At 8%:
Total = ₹1,45,000 × 1.08 = ₹1,56,600
Making charges: the hidden cost
Making charges vary wildly by jeweller and design — from around 6% for plain bangles to 20% or more for intricate, handcrafted work. Some jewellers quote "per gram" making charges instead of a percentage; both are just different ways to charge the same thing. Because the gold rate itself is published daily and differs little between stores, making charges are where jewellers earn their margin and where the real comparison happens. Ask for the making charge in writing before you commit, and compare it across shops the way you would compare a gold rate.
Check the purity, not just the price tag
Reputable jewellers in India hallmark their gold under the BIS hallmarking scheme — you will see a fineness mark such as 916 for 22k or 750 for 18k stamped on the piece. A lower price per gram can simply mean lower purity: "22k at ₹6,800" might be genuine but thin-marked 18k being sold loosely. When a jeweller converts old jewellery or offers an exchange, they weigh only the actual gold in the piece — stones are assessed separately, and studded or hollow items weigh differently from solid ones.
When you sell
When you sell gold back, most buyers pay only for the gold value, not the making charges you originally paid. So a "loss" at resale is partly the making charges + GST you can't recover. This is why comparing total cost (gold + making + GST) matters when buying jewellery — and why coins and bars, which carry minimal making charges, retain value far better than crafting-heavy jewellery.
A note on rates
The price per gram changes daily with global gold prices and the rupee. This calculator lets you enter today's rate from your jeweller or a trusted gold-price source — it does not fetch live prices. For an honest purchase, enter the pure gold value per gram for the carat you are buying, not the store's inflated "jewellery rate" that bakes in margins.
helpFrequently asked questions
question_markHow is gold price calculated?
Gold value = weight × price per gram for the chosen purity. Jewellers add making charges (typically 8–14%) and GST on top of the gold value. On 20 grams of 22k at ₹7,250/g, the gold value is ₹1,45,000 and an 8% making charge brings the total to ₹1,56,600.
question_markWhat is 22k gold?
22k gold is 91.6% pure gold, the standard for jewellery in India. It carries the BIS hallmark 916, and it is more durable than 24k (99.9%) pure gold, which is too soft for everyday wear.
question_markWhy do I lose money when selling gold jewellery?
Buyers usually pay only for the gold value, not the making charges and GST you paid. The difference is effectively a cost of buying new jewellery. Coins and bars carry minimal making charges, so they retain value far better than crafted pieces.
question_markDoes this calculator use live gold rates?
No. Gold rates change daily (tracking global prices and the rupee), so you enter today's price per gram. You can find current rates from major jewellers or gold-price trackers.
