Ever leave a car idling? The engine warms up, the cabin cools, the fuel gauge creeps down — without the car moving an inch. Your body does the same thing, around the clock. Even if you spend the whole day on the couch, your heart still pumps, your lungs still expand, your cells still repair themselves, and your body temperature still holds steady. The energy bill for all of that is your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) — the fuel your body burns while "idling."

For most people, that idle burn is the single biggest chunk of their total daily energy use, typically around 60–75% of everything you burn in a day. Knowing your BMR is the foundation of almost every sensible calorie plan — because you can't decide how much to eat until you know what your body spends before you've moved a muscle.

What BMR really measures

Strictly, a "basal" measurement is taken under controlled conditions: you've fasted for around 8–12 hours, rested overnight, and are lying still and awake in a temperature-neutral room. Clinically, it's measured by the oxygen you consume and carbon dioxide you produce. Most of us will never get that measurement — so scientists built formulas that estimate it from ordinary details you already know.

The formulas aren't measuring your body directly. They're comparing you, mathematically, to people whose metabolic rates were actually measured. That's their strength and their limitation: they're excellent general estimates and imperfect personal predictions. Real BMR differs between individuals by comfortably more than the little remaining formula error, driven partly by how much lean muscle you carry — muscle tissue is metabolically expensive to maintain even at rest.

The two formulas you'll actually meet

Mifflin-St Jeor is the most commonly recommended default for everyday use — it was developed in 1990 from a healthy adult population and is the formula most modern tools (including ours) lean on.

Men:    BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5
Women:  BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161

Worked example — a 30-year-old man, 175 cm, 75 kg:

BMR = 10 × 75 + 6.25 × 175 − 5 × 30 + 5
    = 750 + 1,093.75 − 150 + 5
    ≈ 1,699 kcal per day

The Katch-McArdle formula takes a different route. Instead of guessing your fat-and-muscle mix from age and sex, it asks for your lean body mass directly:

BMR = 370 + 21.6 × lean body mass (kg)

Because it factors in actual muscle mass, Katch-McArdle is often the better choice for lean or athletic people — those who are very muscular, or very much not. The catch is that it needs an accurate body-fat reading, which most of us don't have reliably at hand. Garbage in, garbage out: if your body-fat number is off, your BMR estimate inherits the error.

From "idle burn" to an actual calorie target

Here's the most common mistake in all of nutrition: treating BMR as the amount to eat. BMR is a floor, not a target. On top of the idle burn, the day adds activity — walking, working, cooking, training — plus the energy used to digest the food you eat. Multiply BMR by an activity factor and you get your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), the number that truly maintains your weight:

So our 30-year-old man with a BMR of ~1,699 and moderate activity:

TDEE = 1,699 × 1.55 ≈ 2,633 kcal/day to maintain weight

If he ate his BMR of 1,699 instead, he'd be running a daily deficit of nearly 1,000 kcal — faster weight loss than most plans should target, and a good path toward losing lean tissue alongside fat.

Where estimates go wrong

  • The formula is an average. Published analyses of the major equations show they can drift from a measured value by a hundred-plus kcal in either direction for many individuals. The estimate is a sensible starting point; your real number is whatever actually holds your weight steady.
  • Muscle changes the math. Since muscle burns more at rest than fat, gaining or losing 3–5 kg of lean mass shifts your BMR over time. Recalculate after meaningful body-composition changes, not just after weight changes.
  • Age isn't destiny. The formula docks calories for each passing year, partly reflecting typical muscle loss — but a fit 55-year-old can easily have a higher idle burn than a sedentary 30-year-old.
  • Weight loss lowers BMR. As you get lighter, your body has less tissue to maintain. This is one reason plateaus happen: your maintenance number quietly shrinks as you shrink.

The practical takeaway

BMR is the single most useful number to know before any calorie-based plan — but it's only the first layer. Use your BMR to reach your TDEE, then decide whether to eat above, below, or at that maintenance line depending on your goal. And treat every formula result as a hypothesis to be tested against real-world feedback: track your weight for a couple of weeks and dial the numbers in by 100–200 kcal as the scale and your energy levels report back with the truth.
